Willow is an abundant wetlands plant on our landscape that has been tended for basketry across many cultures in the Northern hemisphere for thousands of years. Its straight, resilient and flexible rods have been shaped into every form and function from utility baskets, bassinets, coffins, wicker chairs, archways, fencing, cheese molds, trays, and more!
Weaving with willow is a craft of unending inspiration and satisfying practicality, but the willow plant too has a way of befriending and imparting many teachings through its gentle, yet exacting personality. While we practice the fundamentals of weaving during this two-day weaving immersion, we will be learning from this plant, allowing our emotions and hands to flow, and weaving community through our storytelling and song.
Workshop facilitator Hosanna White is an earth artist and educator dedicated to learning slow crafts that connect her with the source of her materials and the magic that comes from transforming them for everyday use.
She lives in the foothills of Western Oregon, a geologically rich landscape that has inspired her studio work, Whitesnake Arts. She blends bio-regional history and land stewardship into her earth pigment artwork and place based pottery.
She began weaving with willow in 2016, persisting through a few years of stubborn skill building to finally fall in love with the craft and the tending of willows through the seasons. She is a hobby weaver and a passionate teacher; integrating information, technique, and the emotional process of creativity.
Workshop details
Weaving a round base basket includes twining a base, selecting spokes to set the basket upward, a few simple patterns for weaving around, closing the border, and adding a handle (if wanted and there is time).
Each step is a new pattern to practice and each time you practice it gets easier. This can be built upon with each subsequent weaving project you do, regardless of the shape.
Woven has begun tending a willow stand near Eugene and welcomes basket students from this class to join us for a winter work party (date TBD) to learn how and where to plant, tending techniques, as well as take home some stalks for planting. your own patch.
